Making Petroglyphs in 3rd Grade Art
12:42 PM
We made petroglyphs in 3rd grade art. It was our first official project having to do with our "Art History Timeline"
I showed pictures of petroglyphs and then handed out a page with symbols that have been found in countries where petroglyphs have been found.
We used air dry modeling clay one day to make the rocks. The next day we painted them with acrylic paint and let it dry. While we waited we finished our journals and then drew our image on the first page along with "Psalm 8" which is our bible reference for this project. When dry, we used open, large paperclips to scratch in our design.
We are starting with year one in the creation story and exploring a time line of art techniques throughout history. I have no idea where we will end up but I think it will be fun.
Each project will try to illustrate a bible reference or idea.
I chose Psalm 8:3-9 for this one because most petroglyphs are about man and animals.
When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him? Yet you have made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor. You have given him dominion over the works of your hands; you have put all things under his feet, all sheep and oxen, and also the beasts of the field, the birds of the heavens, and the fish of the sea, whatever passes along the paths of the seas.
O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!
Psalm 8:3-9 (ESV)
Here are a few samples - these are the kid's work that I can remember who did what.
FYI
The modeling clay was too brittle - I am glad I took pictures - and the acrylic did not stick well. Use regular air-dry clay and tempera instead.
